Thai Lanna style Gold Reclining Buddha, approx 40cm long, SLP603.

This Reclining Buddha is hand carved in wood with a real gold leaf finish and coloured glass decoration. Lanna style. Made in Thailand. Please note: with these kind of pieces there may be some minor damage or minor losses to the glass decoration. This reclining Buddha shows the Buddha resting on his right hand meaning that this statue is related to the legend of the giant Asurindarahu who did not want to bow before the Buddha, but when the Buddha lay down he was larger than the giant, humbling him as he showed the giant the glory of all the heavenly figures that were larger than the giant. Statues of the reclining Buddha are often very large in Thailand as they relate to this story. This reclining Buddha should not be confused with other reclining images where the Buddha's right hand is by his side, depicting his last moments on earth before entering Nirvana.
