Wooden Masu Compartment Box - Standard Japanese Rice Measure or Condiment Box, Large 0.9 litres.
A Japanese masu box was originally used as a standard measuring box for rice. Nowadays they can still be used for this purpose, but are also used a small condiment box for the dining table.
Masu was a unified standard set up by the Edu Shogunate in 1669. This is a 5-Gou Masu Box. The capacity equates to 0.9 litres.
Made from Paulownia wood, grown in Asia. Also known as the 'Princess tree' or 'Kiri' in Japan. It is a deciduous hardwood, not affected by humidity and moisture and has very low thermal conductivity. Lightweight but with the highest strength to weight ratio of any wood in the world.
